BOXING CANADA PLANS FOR CHANGE: By Brian Zelley

GETTIN BEYOND THE HERE AND NOW
A good starting point for members of BOXING CANADA
as they prepare a stategic plan for the next 8 years that will
include the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

The starting point was the 40 or so members from across Canada
that took the time and effort to discuss and plan for
a bright future in Canadian amateur boxing.

It is unknown at this date how the plan will be finalized,
but a wise thing that should be done is for the proposed plan
to be drafted into a discussion paper so all interested individuals
and groups are able to review, discuss and comment on the key issues
and suggestions. In recent days, some members of BOXING NOVA SCOTIA
have been studying the strategic plan. Hopefully, once they get a full
understanding of the issues and proposals constructive comments will
be possible. It is hoped that members of other Provincial Associations
will get the same opportunity to participate in this member focused plan.

NEWFOUNDLAND BOXING FLASHBACKS 1997

The sport of amateur boxing on the Island of Newfoundland is not
as high profile as many other Provincs, but they do have a history.

JUNE 1997 MOMENTS TO REMEMBER

DOUG FOWLER would bere-elected for his sixth ther
as president of BOXING NEWFOUNDLAND. Some of the
other names of interest were Randell Rideout,
Kevin Greeley, Ian MacNeil and Mike Summers.

Some of the boxing clubs were:
Conception Bay South Boxing club,
Hilltop Boxing Club and Twin Cities Boxing club.
One of the boxers to remember was Donnie Hunt.

THE HERE AND NOW, 2000 to 2011
The Republic Boxing club and two key names associated
with the club are Jason Hayward and Eddie Raymond.
Around 2005/2006, Hayward was a fine young featherweight boxer.

In 2008, Jason "Too Sweet" Hayward was training
in Halifax, Nova Scotia and fighting as a super bantamweight
and a bantamweight. He briefly held the Canadian Super
Bantamweight title from October 2006 to March 2007 and in 2008
he lost to Andrew Kooner for the Bantamweight title.

As Canadian boxers prepare to participate
in the 2011 Pan Am Games in Mexico, it is
a good time to flashback to past tournaments
to touch on the history and the acnievements
of the many boxers such as 1975 Gold medal
winner Chris Clarke. One of the 2011 boxers
that hopes to follow in the footsteps of Clarke
will be BRODY BLAIR.

As we look back one of the teams was the
1967 team including Walter Henry, Frank Scott,
Wayne Boyce, Gerald Ratte, Dick Findlay,
Freddy Fuller, Donato Paduano and Marijan Kolar.

Before we can start the NEW BEGINNING for 2011/2012
we must ask the following question:
are BOXING CANADA, The provincial associations and
each and every amateur boxing club READY,
WILLING and ABLE to meet the challenge of
GROWTH, OPPORTUNITY and ACTIVITY or will it be
BACK TO BLACK?

THE FOUNDATION
The foundation starts at the club level and each
club must be given the support and encouragement
from their Provincial Amateur Boxing Associations
to participate, and the starting point is growth,
followed by an opportunity to have regular boxing
cards and to work with other regional clubs for
greater training opportunitiesw and activity.

From British Columbia to New Foundland, there are hundreds of
boxing clubs. Each one has a mission and a purpose. They try
to follow the rules of BOXING CANADA and the Provincial
Associations such as boxing bc, boxing alberta and others.

BRITISH COLUMBIA CLUBS

Starting with British Columbia, a list of the active clubs
can be found on the BOXING BC web site. Some
have the history of 40 years include Campbell River Eagles
now Campbell River Boxing and Fitness another Island
club of long duration is the Nanaimo Boxing Club.

There are numerous clubs from Action Boxing Club to the
Williams Lake Boxing Club with Gary McLellan and
Rick Albrechtsen.

For some of us , following the performance of Bob, Jag and Kenny is a pleasure.
The Prince George news media has done a good job of tracking their combined
journey.

For me, it is a different sort of interest that began in 1969. I still remember that teenager
named BOB PEGUES wanting a boxing club in Nanaimo. Well fast forward through the
decades and the recent years since 2000 has been an interesting story of Bob and his
boxers in Prince George.

The recent performances of KENNY LALLY and JAG SEEHRA were exceptional.

All three have many hopes, wishes and dreams, but thinking back to 1969 and the wide-eyed
teenager named Bob confirms that sometimes hopes are realized and dreams come true.

BRODY BLAIR The Boxer: by brian zelley

December 2010 marks the start of another boxing journey for
Nova Scotia amateur middleweight BRODY BLAIR. It has been a few decades since the name Blair became a Canadian and Nova Scotia boxing name
and that was middleweight BLAIR RICHARDSON.

In December, Brody became the new senior open (elite) middleweight
champion But, his boxing journey began a number of years ago and
he first became a national prospect when he won a title in the
2009 Youth National boxing championships at Edmonton, Alberta.
Some of the other champions included Nanaimo's STEFAN MELIDEO,
BC's Robert Couzens, New Brunswick's Mitch Cormier and
Kyle Gross. and Ontario's Matt Flynn.

THE GOLDEN MOMENT
An article called Golden Moment was produced by Adam Richardson
of THE NEWS (New Glasgow). The article would disclose the travels of
Brody from New Glasgow to Halifax to train under 1984 Olympic boxer
WAYNE GORDON.

In 2009, BRODY BLAIR would join other Canadian boxers including Melideo,
Cormier and Couzens in a joint tournament with Puerto Rico.

Attempting to select the top 25 Canadian amateur boxers of all time is a subjective game based on our understanding of the sport and our experiences. Thus, it is likely the same 25 would not appear on all lists.

As a starting point, the select seven would stand a good chance of being on many lists:
EDDIE HADDAD, HAROLD MANN, DONATO PADUANO, WALTER HENRY, IAN CLYDE, LENNOX LEWIS and MICHAEL STRANGE.

1980 - 1989 Canadian Boxing

A GOLDEN DECADE OF CANADIAN AMATEUR BOXING - 1980 - 1989: By Brian W. Zelley

The Eighties gave us many interesting stories in Canadian Amateur Boxing, on a provincial level,
a dawning of a new age would begin for British Columbia and regions like Vancouver Island
with the revival of the BC Diamond Belt tournament at Victoria in 1980.

In Olympic Games history, it started off on the wrong side with the boycott of the Moscow Olympic Games.
But, in 1984 at Los Angeles, Canadian boxers WILLIE DEWIT, SHAWN O'SULLIVAN and DALE WALTERS would win medals
and set the stage for various medals in subsequent Commonwealth Games and the 1988 Olympic Games and the
additional medal victories. Some of the Canadian boxers in 1988 Olympic Games were alumni of the 1984
Junior Nationals that took place in Burnaby, BC such as SCOTTY OLSON and MANNY SOBRAL.

Looking back there were many talented Canadian boxers with various terms as a Canadian Champion and high level performance on the International stage - a sample of names to remember:

Lennox Lewis, Ray Downey, Scott Olson, Asif Dar, Steve Beaupre, Steve and Jaime Pagendam, Dan Sherry,
Eggerton Marcus, Howard and Otis Grant, Gregory Gayle and many more.

BOXING BC - 1980 to 1989

Attempting to highlight the Boxing BC story in the Eighties is an interesting case study from 1980 Diamond Boy
GARY ROBINSON, to Canadian senior champions Champions such as DALE WALTERS, WAYNE WELSH, JOE PENDRY,
MANNY SOBRAL and GERONIMO BIE. Then there were the many boxers that performed on a regular basis from
Vancouver Island to the Alberta border:
Who could forget AL HARPER, ALAN BROWN, ALEX BANKIER, CLIFF BALLENDINE, CLINT DUMAIS, DEEP BUTTER,
GARY WOOD, GORDON JONES, KIT MUNRO, MIKE WOOD, SCOTT and TIM CESSFORD, TONY DUFFY, and WILLY CURRY.

Then there were the many officials and coaches such as officials - AL YOUNG, BERT LOWES, FRED FULLER, RICK BROUGH,
RON WHALLEY, VIC MURDOCH, and many others.

1977 - 1979 The Canadian Boxing Story

1977 - 1979: THE CANADIAN AMATEUR BOXING STORY continues

As we roll along following the 1976 Olympics into the years 1977, 1978 and 1979, boxer IAN CLYDE
continues to tick away like a well oiled watch that appears to last forever, but over the three year period
there would be others that would appear for a little while. Some would be there for the three years stretch
such as BILL RANELLI,, or for a two year period such as DERRICK HOYT (The Pride of Cranbrook, BC). and
ROGER FORTIN and JOHN RAFFERTY. Some other names of interest was Spruce Capital's LAURIE MANN and
NOLAN, DOWNEY & BLAND from the east and not to be forgotten was KELLY PERLETTE.

In 1978 the Canadians did well in the Commonwealth Games with KELLY PERLETTE and ROGER FORTIN
being two standouts, but Canadians won their share of medals with the likes of IAN CLYDE winning silver
and a number of bronze medal winners including RODDY MACDONALD and GUY BOUTIN.

1976 - SPRUCE CAPITAL Boxer - McKnight

SID MCKNIGHT was a fresh new face in Canadian National amateur boxing and joined other champions
such as the veteran Ian Clyde and others such as Cleveland Denny, Chris Clarke, Chris Ius and Carmen Rinke.

Looking back to his term in boxing from 1970 to 1979, the year 1976 turned out to be a glorious year
for the Prince George boxer from the Spruce Capital Boxing Club. During the Seventies, he was
an active boxer in all sorts of tournaments from Bronze Gloves to Golden Gloves.

In time he would be recognized and inducted into the Prince George Hall of Fame
to join others from Harold Mann to Jack Meda and be a permanent boxing hero in
Prince George.

In 1976, Sid was part of the Canadian OLympic Boxing team to participate in
the MONTREAL OLYMPIC GAMES. Others were Ian Clyde, Chris Ius, Camille Huard,
Carmen Rinke, Michael Prevost, Bryan Gibson, and Roger Fortin.

It was a tough Olympics with a blue chip USA team that included:
Leon & Michael Soinks, Ray Leonard, Howard Davis and Davey Armstrong.
Then there were the Cuban boxers such as Tefilio Stevenson.

1975 - CHRIS CLARKE arrives

CHRIS CLRKE JOURNERY: by brian zelley

1975 was the year of the Pan Am Games and one of the stars was Canadian boxer CHRIS CLARKE.

CHRIS was one of eleven Canadian champions. Chris joined returning champions Ian Clyde, Cleveland Denny,
Michael Briere, Michael Prevost, and Bryan Gibson. Another interesting new champion was CARMEN RINKE.

When all is said and done, 1975 belongs to Nova Scotia boxer CHRIS CLARKE. In the Pan Am Games he defeated
AARON PRYOR to win Gold to join the likes of USA boxers DAVEY ARMSTRONG and RAY LEONARD, and Cuban sensation
TEFILIO STEVENSON. Some other names were LEON SPINKS and TREVOR BERBICK.

The Chris Clarke story would continue into 1976 when he moved from lightweight to light-welterweight where he defeated Victoria, BC boxer WAYNE CROWE and joined the 1976 Canadian Olympic Team. Later he would turn pro, and fight various boxers from CLYDE GRAY to SHAWN O'SULLIVAN, Lawrence Hafey and Dick Ekland.

1973 - West vs East Canadian Boxing: By Brian W. Zelley

In 1973, it was an interesting East vs West match-up for the Canadian Amateur Boxing titles.
DON ORR was expected to face JULES BOSSE, but the actual match was
Victoria boxer WAYNE CROWE vs JULES BOSSE. Once again, Quebec's IAN CLYDE won the National senior
championships with a victory over BC boxer Rick Eady, but not all reigning champions were victorious.
Three time champion DALE ANDERSON was replaced by CAMILLE HUARD.

Richmond's BILL GARIEPY was expected to win a title, but it was STAN WILLIAMSON that had his arm raised.

In pre-fight publicity, some of the other line-ups were:

Back in the early part of the 1967-1968 boxing season, my first fight as a member of the Firefighters was
against Richmond's BILL GARIEPY of which I won the decision, so it was nice to see Gariepy move into Canadian National competition. WAYNE CROWE was fighting at the Victoria Boy's Club in 1974, and he would return to the National stage in 1976.

1973 CANADIAN CHAMPIONS

As in 1972, returning champions were Caroll Morgan, Chris Ius, Dave Anderspn, Ian Clyde, and Marvin Arneson.
But there was a surprise from the west coast shores of Vancouver Island when Nanaimo boxer JACK SNAITH
earned the senior light-flyweight title. Then there were Leo Sauve and Denis Belaire

For Nanaimo boxing, it was a significant achievement for the club had started
less than two years earlier in the summer of '71. The story behind the formation
of the Nanaimo Boxing Club is interesting. Of interest, three of the key players of the new club
had former connections of Vancouver Firefighters Boxing Club under the direction of Bert Lowes and Pat West.
The three being co-founders Brian Zelley and Dan Wright and Canadian champion Jack Snaith.

THE DAWN OF THE FIRST OF THE ELITE CHAMPIONS (1969 -2010) By Brian Zelley

In many ways the year 1972 was much the same as 1971 with seven returning champions
including Ius, Hamilton, Anderson, Martinez, Arneson, Guindon and French,
but a fresh new star was about to step on the stage and his name was IAN CLYDE.
Another new boxing star would be CAROLL MORGAN who would replace Jack Meda as the
amateur Canadian heavyweight king.

Some of the returning champions such as CHRIS IUS would be around after 1972 and some wouldn't.
Of course, for those in British Columbia, the Ius name was well know with the likes of Elio Ius (boxer and coach),
Mel Ius, David Ius and then Chris Ius.

1971: CANADIAN SENIOR AMATEUR BOXING CHAMPIONS

Prince George boxer JACK MEDA remained "King of the Heavyweights" and retained the Canadian Amateur Boxing Associations
heavyweight title in 1971. Another comeback kid was MARV ARNESON. JOSE MARTINEZ who was edged by FRANKIE SCOTT
in featherweight action at New WEstminster's "Queen Park Arena" came roaring back in 1971 to win a title.
Then there were those new champions such as DALE ANDERSON, CHRIS IUS and LESLIE HAMILTON.

1970 - Changes In THe BC Golden Gloves

From 1939 to 1969, the BC Golden Gloves was always the standard for excellence in Boxing Tournaments
and quality competition. One exception was the 1967 BC International Diamond Belt tournament that
sets the mark for excellence in competition, organization and public awareness..

However, in 1970 the BCABA (Boxing BC) changed the ground rules of who would host and sponsor
the annual event. And for 1970 that who would be the British Columbia Amateur Boxing Association.
In other provinces, they were also dealing with start-up issues with the new era of CABA -
Canadian Amateur Boxing Association (Now called by the name of BOXING CANADA).

For Canadian boxing, the big National Tournament would take place in New Westminster, British Columbia
at the Queen's Park Arena in May of 1970. At the end of the tournament, except for 1969 light-flyweight champion
NEIL AUSTIN, the "69 crew were replaced. Of interest, one of the new champions was New Westminster's FRANKIE SCOTT/
Frankie, however, was no fresh young rookie. In 1966, he won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games.

When the tournament ended and the bright lights were turned off, the champions were"
Austin, Cooke, Scott, Arneson, Fuller, Doiron, Malish, OLsen, and Meda.

For heavyweight JACK MEDA of Prince George. he had come a long way since tha first venture
into open class boxing in 1967 when he lost to Seattle's WESLEY CRAVEN in the 1967 BC Golden Gloves..

1969 A New Beginning

As the excitement of the 1968 Olympic Games faded with the likes of DICK FINDLAY, WALTER HENRY an DONATO PADUANO
there would be a new beginning in Canadian boxing with the formation of the CANADIAN AMATEUR BOXING ASSOCIATION
and a team led by the likes of JERRY SHEARS.

When it was time to carve the names of the new champions on the wall, one champion from 1968 was still standing
- WALTER HENRY was his name. Then there would be other young ones like NEIL AUSTIN that would carry the torch forward into the SEVENTIES sand others like PAT O'REILLY that showed promise in 1968 tournaments such as the combined
1968 BC Diamond Belt Tournament and BC Olympic Trials and another name of note was the SUMMERHAYES name.

So 1969 was like a bridge that crossed between two eras of amateur boxing and would open the door for a parade of stars
in the Seventies with the ultimate warrior of the Seventies being IAN CLYDE who would serve as the bridge builder into the dawn of the Eighties.

FLYWEIGHT to LIGHTWEIGHT

THE FAST & FURIOUS LIGHTER BOXERS - FLYWEIGHT to LIGHTWEIGHT - CANADIAN CHAMPIONS

For the 2010 Canadian National Championships, the bantamweight and lightweight divisions provided some interesting twists and turns in the history of amateur boxing in Canada. At the end of five days of action, it was Nova Scotia boxer
JOEY LAVIOLETTE that would regain the bantamweight title and Alberta's CAM O'CONNELL that would be declared
the new Canadian "Elite" Senior Open boxing champion that ended-up being an all Alberta lightweight final after both
Cam and Alberta's ALEX RYNN eliminated the competition in earlier action.

BANTAMWEIGHTS - With his back-to-back 2009 and 2010 victory bantamweight champion JOEY LAVIOLETTE
stands tall among other former bantamweight champions such as Chris Ius, Les Hamilton, Bill Ranelli, Dale Walters
and Geronimo Bie. Time will tell if he is able to win a Commonwealth Games, Pan Am Games or Olympic medal,
but he has history on his side and the first test will be to make the 2010 Commonwealth Games boxing team.
Like some of the past champions by the time 2012 rolls around, he may be a featherweight contender.

LIGHTWEIGHTS - As new lightweight champion, it is difficult to predict the length of Cam's Championship
journey, but he has some slick shoes to fill with past champions such as Jose Martinez, Cleveland Denny, Asif Dar,
Bill Irwin and Michael Strange.

AS 2010 shifts into 2011, the question that can't be answered is what will become of KENNY LALLY and ALEX RYNN,
the same question could be asked of former champion BRANDT BUTT and light-welterweight STEFAN MELIDEO or
some of the new contenders such as MARCUS HUME and THOMAS SPEIRS. For British Columbia boxing, the coaches
need to study the history of boxing from 1966 to 1988, and try to go back in time to shine.

For boxing in British Columbia, there are many fine boxers, but they can't settle on being fine or nice. The boxers
and the coaches have a whole "heap" of rebuilding to do and that includes working on technical skills

THE 2010 SENIOR NATIONALS

For the 2010 Senior Nationals, the BOXING BC came up short with no Canadian Champions. One 2009 senior champion.,
KENNY LALLY from Prince George dropped a decision to Nova Scotia's JOEY LAVIOLETTE, and 2009 Cadet champion
STEFAN MELIDEO of Nanaimo stepped up to see action in open senior competition and lost. Then there was Prince George boxer MARCUS HUME who dropped a controversial decision. Other BC boxers also lost in early competition.

The various BC boxing clubs have received a wake-up call that they all need to step-up to meet future challenges
and reawaken the achievements of past decades when BC boxers did well such as the Seventies with such champions as
Chris Ius, Darryl Olsen, Derrick Hoyt, Frank Scott. Freddy Fuller, Jack Meda, Jack Snaith, Joe Cooke, and Les Hamilton.

In the Eighties we had the likes of Dale Walters, Wayne Welsh, Joe Pendry, and Manny Sobral
then came the likes of Jason Heit and Donny Orr.

Donny Orr was the Victoria warrior that despite injuries came back in 2000 to defeat the Canadian champion
twice in box-off competition to earn a spot on the 2000 Canadian Olympic Boxing Team, then followed-up with
the Canadian title in 2001.

Looking at those champions such as Fuller, Scott and Olsen, they were products of the Sixties,
and earned their accomplishments through a lengthy process with many actual bouts from numerous
club shows and tournaments including Golden Gloves activity in places like Vancouver, Portland, Seattle
and Tacoma. For instance between all of the heavy tournaments in 1968, they took time to travel with others
to engage in high level club shows such as an All-Star club show in Seattle which included some top level USA
competition.

Looking back from 1966 to 1984, in the lighter weight classes, how could we forget about the many boxers, fighters and warriors with the two brightest shining stars being FRANKIE SCOTT and DALE WALTERS.

After almost seven days of activity, the new men's senior Canadian amateur boxing champions
have been declared including:

Benoit FLEURY, Ahmed Kartella, Joey Laviolette, Tyler Asselstine, Cam O'Connell,
Ron Makavoz, Custio Clayton. Steve Rolls, Colin Fish, Shaver Henry and Didier Bence.

Of the list of 2009 Champions, those that retained their title include:
BENOIT FLEURY, JOEY LAVIOLETTE. STEVE ROLLS and DIDIER BENCE.

An interesting footnote from preliminary action was 2009 Flyweight champion KENNY LALLY of Prince George, BC
moved to the bantamweight division in 2010 and faced champion JOEY LAVIOLETTE from Nova Scotia.

It is unknown how many of the 2010 group of champions will be selected for the 2010 Team Canada team and
participate in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. There is a possibility that one or more champions could be replaced following the usual box-off matches some of which should take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia during the
Canadian Junior Nationals Amateur Boxing Championships. Also, earning a spot on the Boxing Canada Team may
not guarantee a spot on the team heading for India for Commonwealth Games action.

WOMEN's BOXING

Not to be overlooked or forgotten is the women's National Championships.
Five of the shining stars were MANDY BUJOLD, STEPHANIE WALKER, I. WOODROW,
SUSAN HAAS and KANDI WYATT.

VICTORIA JAYCEES BOXING CLUB

VICTORIA JAYCEES BOXING CLUB

In 1976, the Victoria Athletic Association was formed and the three coaches for the club were
Mike Caird, Brian Zelley and Lou Bujdoso. As time passed, Lou Bujdoso would leave the VAA to form the Victoria Jaycees
Boxing club. Zelley, although on the board of the VAA, would help with some of the coaching. Later when the
VAA lost their building and gym, they would train with the Jaycees.

by 1980, the Victoria Jaycees would be the key club in Greater Victoria with the Victoria Athletics limited to two key boxers
while the majority of boxers in Victoria fought under the Victoria Jaycees banner. Lou would leave to promote
Professional boxing but was replaced by the likes of Mike Sartori and Paul Deluca sr. The first major achievement of the
Victoria Jaycees boxing was the hosting of thee 1980 BC Diamond Belt Championships. The VAA would help, but it was primarily
a Victoria Jaycees affair which would be continued in subsequent years.

For most of the Eighties it would be the Victoria Jaycees that would be the key player in amateur boxing in
Greater Victoria and the Victoria Athletic Boxing Club and the coaches would fade away until a renewal after the
1994 Commonwealth Games. MIKE SARTORI would be the prime coaching force during that time period and would also be one of the first committee members for the Boxing Committee of the Victoria Commonwealth Games Society in preparation
for the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

EX- BOXERS of the VICTORIA JAYCEES

There are a number of boxers that competed under the banner of the Victoria Jaycees, one of many of interest was
RON OGDEN who came from nowhere to win in the 1985 BC Diamond Belt competition held at Victoria's
"Lansdowne Junior High School".

ASTORIA BOXING CLUB

It began in the mid Sixties when some of the members of the Hastings Community Centre Boxing Club under the direction
of PAT O'REILLY left to form the Astoria Boxing Club ay the Astoria Hotel on Vancouver's east side. The primary force behind the club was WALTER BOYCE and in 1967 and 1968 the primary boxing star was WAYNE BOYCE and Clint Page, Bill Taylor, Rick Fleck and Glenn McGee.

In 1967 after winning the BC Golden Gloves and BC Diamond Belt tournaments, Wayne would win the
Canadian Amateur Featherweight title and participate in the 1967 Pan Am Games.

AS the years slipped by some of the members of the former Northwest Eagles Boxing Club of North Vancouver
would be part of the Astoria Boxing Club story with the appearance of ELIO IUS and some of his boxers in the mid-Seventies
and by the mid-Eighties former boxer GEORGE ANGELOMATIS would head the coaching team and former Burnaby boxer
DALE WALTERS would become part of the Astoria team.

Some of the boxers that would compete for the AStoria team in the mid-Eighties would be
Laird Goodwill, Terry Dermott, Scotty Scott, Merv Davies, Jerome Briatt, Alex Bankier,
Jason Diablo, Peter Kaulius,Eddie Lee and Ray Abraham.

Founded in 1971 by Dan Wright and Brian Zelley with assistance from John Ormandy and George Nepper

Two of the Canadian champions from the Nanaiimo Boxing club are Jack Snaith and Stefan Melideo..
Between Jack in 1973 and Stefan in 2009, the club has an interesting history, and before Jack Snaith's
in 1973, both Dan Wright and Brian Zelley engaged in bouts on the first two club shows hosted by the
club. Also, a number of young boxers competed in Bronze Gloves tournaments.

One of the important lessons that was learned early was the need for public awareness, acceptance
and education to ensure growth and activity. This was done at an early stage with direct contact with
sports editor Mark Kiemele of the "Nanaimo Daily Free Press".

The Victoria Athletic Association was founded on August 31, 1976 and would sponsor a variety of sports including
amateur boxing. The three boxing coaches would be Caird, Zelley and Lou Bujdoso.

the first boxing card hosted by the newly formed VAA would be in November 1976 at 1600 Quadra Street
in Victoria, BC with eleven boxers from Victoria matched against clubs from Nanaimo, Powell River, and
Vancouver's Hastings Community Centre Boxing Club.

To ensure the growth of amateur boxing in Greater Victoria and Vancouver island, the next day after the
boxing card, the VAA hosted an "official's clinic" to develop local judges and referees under the rules of
the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association (Boxing Canada) by experienced BCABA officials.

From out-off the ring dust of yesterday to the achievements of
current boxers, officials and coaches, Manitoba Amateur Boxing
has and will provide some rich history to Canadian Amateur Boxing.

Two stars of the past that also had some activity in British Columbia
were EDDIE HADDAD and BILLY PINKUS.

EDDIE HADDAD

There have been a few stories touching on the achievements of
Eddie Haddad. Some of them can be found on the pages of a
"Sports Hall of Fame". For Eddie, they include Canadian Forces,
Greater Victoria and Manitoba Sports Halls of Fame.
Another story is written on the wall of "Tragic Boxing Stories
& Lost Warriors". The specifics may be cloudy, but in Hope, BC
Eddie was killed in a road accident.

KEN JOHNSON - A SHOT FROM THE DARK

Len Johnson was well known in boxing circles beyond the borders
of Manitoba. By 1984, his son KEN JOHNSON had hopes and dreams
to make the Olympic Team. But his hopes and dreams were dashed
beyond the ring activity.

In 1984, Ken Johnson faced BC bpxer and a Canadian champion
WAYNE WELSH in Olympic Box-off action during the staging of the
Junior Nationals at Burnaby in the BCABA's boxing training centre.
Ken won the ring fight, but was overlooked when the final team was
selected that included Willie deWit, Shawn O'Sullivan, Dale Walters,
Steve Pagendam, Wayne Gordon, Lennox Lewis, John Lalbhenn,
Rick Duff and Billy Dunlop.

Johnson has not been the first to be left off of a Canadian Amateur Boxing team,
and he will not be the last. The story of boxing is scattered with lost hope,
wishes and dreams of many - sometimes it is freak or poorly timed accident,
but then again sports politics from a Provincial to a National and a
International level often delivers the fatal blow like a shot from the dark.

REGINA - KEN GOFF

There is much boxing history in the clubs of Saskatchewan of which one long serving one is the
REGINA BOXING CLUB founded by KEN GOFF in 1949. Since 1994, the boxing club hosts
the annual "Ken Goff Memorial Boxing Classic. This annual show was initiated by
George Goff and Pat Fiacco.

FIDDLER, SUNSHINE & LINKLATER

There have been a number of outstanding amateur boxers over the years.
In the early Eighties one of many was CURTIS FIDLER of the Prince Albert Boxing Club.
In 1983, he received "The John Galon Trophy" as Saskatchewan's "Boxer Of The Year".
There would be other outstanding boxers such as WESLEY SUNSHINE and VERNON LINKLATER.

IAN's CORNER - SOO LINE BOXING and Coach Hartenburger

In late 1973, Saskatchewan's Weyburn boxer from the "Soo Line Boxing Club" IAN WEIR and Nanaimo's
DAN WRIGHT and BRIAN ZELLEY would join the Victoria Boxing Club that was being operated out of the
Victoria Boy's Club in Victoria, BC which was then being operated by MIKE CAIRD and GORDIE MAGAW.
With the arrival of Ian and the two from Nanaimo, it would begin a major revival in for boxing in
Victoria in the 1973/74 boxing season that would see boxer WAYNE CROWE winning a silver medal in
the Canadian senior natioal boxing championships.

Weir's Soo Line coach was HANK HARTENBURGER and one of his teammates was noted boxer and official
MORGAN WILLIAMS. Over the years, Coach Hartenburger would have fine boxers such as DON GRANT
and KELLY NELSON an many others.

In recognition of boxing coach Hank Hartenburger, he was roasted at the
Royal Canadian Legion to recognize his long service in amateur boxing.

ALBERTA BOXING - Then and Now

The sport of amateur boxing in Alberta has played
an important role in Canadian Amateur Boxing and has
produce many fine boxers,coaches and officials.

Some past names to remember include Bill Page Harvey Reti,
Paul Hortie, Billy McGrandle, Alan Ford, Willie deWit,
Rick Duff, Scotty Olson, Denis Belair, Jim Titley and
DALE BROWN. And, who could forget the amateur and pro
record of WILF GREAVES.

But, the Alberta Amateur Boxing story is more than a few names,
but it is about the many lubs such as the Cougar Boxing Club
or the West Edmonton Knights or boxing in Medicine Hat, Calgary
or Edmonton and other small tons scattered throughout the Province.

It is about club shows in Alberta or boxers traveling to
British Columbia in 2009 or 1985 for club shows in Cranbrook or
Prince George, and Golden Glove tournaments such as Calgary's
VERN FOUTH in 1967, or National tournaments staged each year
across Canada from east to west.

It is about novice boxers starting out,and Canadian champions
engaged in International tournaments
and the Alberta coaches and officials that participated in
the action far and wide such as the 1994 Commonwealth Games
in Victoria or the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angele.

HERE & NOW = A door to the past

In order to understand the past, we must look at the here and now
because each coach, official, executive member and active boxer
involved have a story that touches on the past.

Some of the names of today in executive positions with
BOXING ALBERTA have interesting stories that touch on
past events from local shows to Canadian events. some of
the names include Denis Belair, Ginnie Brown, Kerry Fahlman,
Sylvio Fex and Rosemary Page.

CLUBS & COACHES - The Here & Now

Some of the clubs and club officials of today have moments
to remember from the past as they weave new thread for
the tapestry of Boxing Alberta.

There is the the Bowmont Boxing Club with Ginnie BROWN
and the team, but also Stuart McGrandle with the West Edmonton
Knights with that old time family connection with our Alberta star
of the Sixties - BILLY MCGRANDLE.

Or slip over to Medicine Hat with Stan INSKO or at Camrose
with Don WILSON and "The Force", then in Lodgepole we find
DOUG BOLIANATZ who has some interesting stories of
Commonwealth Games memories and moments such as
those interesting days in 1994 at the Commonwealth Games
of Victoria where the boxing action took place in Esquimalt
which was the hot bed of amateur boxing in the Fifties & Sixties
with the likes of Alan Curtis, Fred Desrosiers, Taylor Gordon
and many more.

Or, slip into Red Deer with the likes of Rob Carswell,

in recent times one action packed boxing cards hosted by
the West Edmonton featured various boxers from Alberta and BC.

Sometimes all that glitters is just the shine from a Golden Gloves tournament. Stepping back in time. the first Golden Gloves tournament in British Columbia was in 1939,and has continued
for years except for 1943.

The first Golden Boys were PHIL VICKERY, TERRY DOYLE,
BOB HICKIE, JACKIE HAMILTON amd CHESTER ORR.
Others would follow such as Sammy May, Eddie Haddad
and Harold Mann

Chester Orr was presented his Golden Boy tropy by Sid Beech
with announcer Tommy Cruise doing his thing at the conclusion
of the 1945 Golden Gloves sponsored by the Vancouver Sun and
hosted by the "Vancouver Active Club" and sanctioned by the
"AAU of Canada" and "BC AMATEUR BOXING ASSOCIATION'.

Some of the boxers in those early years were a who's who of
amateur boxing in British Columbia and some would return
in future years to participate as coaches, officials or fans
such as Victoria's VIC MURDOCH who was also the 1944 Seattle
Golden Gloves flyweight champion. Then there were the likes of
Lyle Kehoe, Freddy Steele, Jackie Turner, Bobby Parker,
Tommy Symes, Gordon Grayson, Art Burgess, Bus Lindsay,
Jack Herwynen and Jimmy Crook.

As the years flashed by, there would be many new boxers to
shine under the bright lights of the BC Golden Gloves.
Some that saw action in amateur boxing in the Fifties were there
to continue the action, excitement and the history into the Sixties.

A sample of the boxers are ALAN CURTIS, SKIMP WILLIAMS,
TOMMY BLACK. LINDY LINDMOSER, MIKE CAIRD, GORDIE McGAW,
BILL ADAMS, JACK STRAZA, BOB GINETTI and WINNIE SCHELT.

As the Sizzling Sixties moved forward to 1968 there
would be many more such as FRED FULLER, FRANKIE SCOTT,
WAYNE BOYCE, BRIAN ZELLEY, KALMAN SANTOSI, MIKE SARTORI,
ROGER ADOLPH, DICK FINDLAY, JACK MEDA,BILLY TAYLOR,
TOMMY BOYCE, RICK FLECK, HAROLD HANDLIN, DEREK AUSTIN,
RON WILSON, TONY JAMES, JOHN AMOS and DAVE WYLIE.

Also, BC would also see some outstanding boxers from
Portland,Seattle and Tacoma
uch as RAY LAMPKIN, NEIL KNIGHT, WESLEY CRAVEN
and GARY FERRARI.

In BC Junior Golden Gloves action one of the outstanding
stars was Victoria's CLIFF BALLENDINE - three time
Junior Golden Boy, but in the Eighties there were
many more to shine such as:
TONY FRANCIS, TONY DUFFY, MANNY SOBRAL, MIKE WOOD
JASON DOWNIE, ALAN BROWN and MANNY SOBRAL

Looking back from 2009 to 1969, there have been
hundreds of names, that on a cold winter night
somebody may remember some golden memory from
the past and recall a moment in time when the amateur
boxer such as Neil Austin, Willie Benallie, Lou Cooke,
Perry Demosten, Chester Douglas, John Gamble, Bill Gariepy,
Mickey Griffin, Les Hamilton, Derrick Hoyt, David Ius,
Gordie Lawson, Sid McKnight, Mike O'Reilly, Buzz Montour,
Jamie Ollenberger, Darryl Olsen, Don Orr, Gary Robinson,
Jack Snaith,Steve Tohill,Dale Walters Ed Williams, and
Dan Wright, Mike Kennedy and Matt O'Brien were STARS.

NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN
There are many names that did not get mentioned in the
above overview such as Glenn McGee, Wayne Crowe

Throughout the decades, there have been many clubs from Victoria to Gold River, Port Alberni to Chemainus,
and hundreds of individuals from boxers Eddie Haddad to Donny Orr, Skimp Williams to Stefan Melideo.
Champions and contenders from 1964 Olympian Fred Desrosiers to 1973 Canadian senior champion Jack Snaith.
Vancouver Island Champions- Tommy Black to Brian Zelley, and Senior Golden Boys like Sammy May & Alan Curtis
to three time junior Golden Boy Cliff Ballendine.

There has been tournaments such as the 2000 Canadian Senior Nationals to the 1978 Nanaimo Bathtub Capital
Golden Gloves tournaments, and the 1976 English Schoolboy boxers vs BC Select Juniors like Dale Walters.

There have been many coaches and officials with the likes of Harry Morris, Taylor Gordon, Jim Hills,
Harry Pollitt & Skimp Williams.

Serving as ring officials like Jack O'Hanley, Howard Curling, Rick Brough, Bert Wilkinson,
Joe Preston & many more scattered from Campbell River to Victoria.

There have been boxing clubs with a short duration like the Ladysmith Boxing Club, to old ones such as the
Nanaimo Boxing Club from 1971 to 2009 and beyond. Or clubs that hosted two Vancouver Island Championship
Tournaments: London Boxing Club (1964) and Parksville Boxing Club (1984). And new boxing clubs
such as the Capital City Boxing Club

To document some of the history, there are The Sportscaster, Daily newspapers, Nanaimo Times,
Leisure Magazine, The Vancouver Island Amateur Boxing News (Spring & Fall - 1983) and then there
was the "B C Amateur Boxing News".

Then there was a few years to remember with the preparation of the 1994 Commonwealth Games
with some early members of the Boxing Committee in 1989 - Hassan Sunderani, Brian Zelley,
Mike Sartori, and Glynn Jones (Boxing BC rep).

The year 2009 has seen a number of former boxers entered in a local, provincial of international sports or boxing hall of fame.

Caird will be inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame on November 21, 2009
at the Pacific Institute of Sports Excellence along with a number of others such as the late
Jack Short known by many as "The Voice Of The Races", golfer Bill Wakeham, fastball builder
Herb Bate, olympic medalist Jesse Monroe-Gonin, Moe Elewonibi and
the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club.

CAIRD's JOURNEY:

For Mike Caird, his boxing journey began in the mid-Fifties as an amateur boxer
in Victoria with numerous bouts including his victory in the 1963 BC Golden Gloves
and participation in many club shows and tournaments including the
1964 Vancouver Island Amateur Boxing Championships.

His coaching journey began after 1964 until about 2001 when boxer Donny Orr Jr.
won a senior National Boxing Championship and in 2000 Orr was in the Summer Olympics
as part of the Canadian Olympic Boxing Team that included Michael Strange, Scott MacIntosh
and others (See listing).

Some of the other coaches that worked with Mike throughout the years were:
Gordie McGaw, Larry Montgomery, Brian Zelley, Lou Bujdoso, Jim Ballendine,

For some it is a brutal sport, for others it is a hope, a dream, a wish.

It is a "question of balance" - "poetry in motion" - "a road to somewhere or a road to nowhere"

Boxing is a mix of chemistry of emotions, and basic physics of movement. leverage and force.
but you do not need a PHD in the Sciences or the Arts, but a generous level of logic, emotional intelligence
and communication skills could play an important role for whoever sets foot on the boxing highway.

Poetry in Motion - or a series of sepia photos flashing through the mind.
Beyond the power of the punch is the movement and motion
of the boxer dancing side-to-side, or executing a series of fast flashing jabs.
The boxer blocking and slipping the jabs and firing back with a fast jab, hook or cross.
The boxer bobbing & weaving under the punches and being a drummer in a band as
he fires back with a rat-a-tat-tat of body punches or a short right hand to the ear.
The boxer shifting his/her weight from left to right and back again or rocking back onto
the right heel.

Boxing is a comedy, a comedy of errors, a drama for the fighters, coaches and fans.
And, for some it is a tragedy of lost hopes, wishes and dreams, or the sad case of the
lost warrior.

Then again boxing is a "magic trick" where the art of "feinting" becomes the trap
that fools the foe into countering or defending against illusions in the mind.

1969 was the dawn of a new age in Canadian Amateur Boxing when after the formation of the
Canadian Amateur Boxing Associations, But, some of the champions and contenders of pre-1969
would be there to earn National Championships beyond 1968.

Old champions like Wayne Boyce, Dick Findlay, Donato Paduano and Billy Taylor just faded away
while the likes of Jack Meda. Frank Scott, Walter Henry, Fred Fuller, Darryl Olsen & Pat O'Reilly came back to
fight another day and another few rounds and were joined by new faces on the senior Nationals scene such as Ian Clyde
and Jack Snaith between 1969 and 1973 (the first five years of a new beginning).

FRANK SCOTT

Frank Albert Scott (1949 - 2005) - Elite Boxer - Bronze Medal 1966

It has been over 24 years since I saw Frankie Scott, the last time was during my time as an executive member
of the British Columbia Amateur Boxing Association in the mid-Eighties. Frank was a boxing coach then.
However, it was in early Sixties when I first heard about the Scott family when former Chemainus Legion Boxing club
member Leon Nepper lost a bout to Frank's brother Keith Scott.

Fast forward to September 1967, when I moved to Vancouver from Nanaimo. One day I took a bus ride
to New Westminster to visit the "Best Cafe" which was run by the Scott family. During 1967/68 boxing season,
both Frank Scott and I would join the Firefighters Boxing Club and train with boxers like Dave Wylie and Fred Fuller,
and many others. It was expected to be an active year with our bright young eyes looking towards the 1968 Olympics
along with boxers like Dick Findlay, Wayne Boyce and many others.

Of the four Golden Gloves tournaments that I entered, the ones in Tacoma and Vancouver, I appeared in the
bantamweight division while in the Seattle and Tacoma Golden Gloves it was the featherweight division.
In both the Portland & Vancouver tournaments, both Frankie and I fought our way into the finals
and met in the middle of the ring to touch gloves.

In May 1984, as editor of the "BC Amateur Boxing News", I put together a pre-1984 Junior National Boxing
Championships & Senior National Olympic Box-Offs issue. But, to add slices of history, I added
pictures of Frank Scott, Ed Williams, Bill Gariepy, Pat O'Reilly Jr., Billy Taylor, Fred Desrosiers,,
Dick Findlay, and even a pictire of our 1983 Jr. Provincial Team which included nine boxers and two coaches.
Boxers included Alan Brown, Willy Curry, Mike Wood, Tony Frances and others.

The piece about FRANK SCOTT started with the sentence:
"The Pride and Joy of New Wesminster, his record is second to none" (That sure was a great punch line
for our lad Frank Albert Scott.

Frank is to be remembered on Friday at the last boxing card at Willingdon Avenue in Burnaby
along with Lennie Walters and George Armson.

There are many more stories to tell about the boxer Frankie Scott and the boxing coach Frankie Scott.

At the present time, there are only seven persons connected to boxing that are in :The Hall",
now is the time to add one more. Of the thousand of folks connected to amateur boxing
today and yesterday, the late FRANKIE SCOTT deserves to join the other seven.

CLUBS & COACHES - ELIO IUS

Looking back through the years, ELIO IUS, - BC Golden Gloves Alumni was a very active boxing coach
at North Vancouver North West Eagles boxing club in the Sixties and early Seventies and would later
coach at the Astoria Boxing Club on Hastings Street in Vancouver

A couple of others that helped Elio was Mel Ius and Terry Cooke at the North West Eagles.
During the Sixties, the club was a force behind the BC Bronze Gloves tournaments for novice junior boxers.

Throughout the long history of boxing, Nova Scotia has paid a significant role
through Boxing Nova Scotia and Boxing Canada - some leaders over the years include
RICHARD (Dick) MACLEAN and TAYLOR GORDON and many others.

In actual boxing competition, there have many boxers over the decades such as
Rickey Anderson, Buddy Askri, Raymond Downey, Dave Downey,
Darell Flint, Wayne Gordon, Joey Laviolette, Carroll Morgan and Randall Thompson
. THE GORDON FAMI:Y.

For many years Taylor Gordon has been a fixture of Nova Scotia Boxing and
a Team Canada Boxing Coach, but there was a time when Taylor was just an
ordinary amateur boxer when he was stationed in the Esquimalt region of
Greater Victoria in British Columbia when he participated in the 1963 BC Golden Gloves.
In 1964, he would also appear in the corner of the Canadian Navy boxers fighting
in the London Boxing Club hosted cards in Victoria.

NANAIMO'S NEWCASTLE BOXING CLUB

FLASHBACKS: NEWCASTLE BOXING CLUBm NANAIMO, BC (1963 - 1968)

(Vancouver Island Amateur Boxing News - Fall of 1983)

September 1983 marks the 20th. year since the Newcastle Boxing Club was formed by

GEORGE NEPPER. In September 1963, Nepper obtained the use of the basement

of the "Newcastle Hotel" from Jim Clark.

By January 16, 1964, five boxers were ready to compete in the blue and gold of the newly formed club. The first boxer to lace on the gloves was Roger Nepper who defeated

Al Robinson of the London Boxing Club in Victoria.

In the 1964/1965 season, the club moved to the basement of "Harvey Murphy Men's Wear".

In the "1964 BC Bronze Gloves" four of five Nanaimo boxers won titles including

Rick Tait, Keith McPherson, Ken Stant and Mike Lazare. Lazare also won the 135 lb.

title in the "BC Emerald Gloves".

In the 1965/1966 season, the club moved to the Madill building by Nanaimo's Civic Arena.

Again the club moved in 1966/67 season to the home of George Nepper. In that season.

Rick Johnson punched his way into the finals of the Bronze Gloves then defeated

L. Harding of Richmond. Brian Zelley entered the 1967 BC Golden Gloves and

defeated Vern Fouth (Calgary) and Steve Flajole (Seattle), then lost to Wayne Boyce

(Vancouver). Brian then entered the 1967 BC Diamond Belt tournament where he

defeated Brian Gray (Burnaby) and Ted Webb (Oregon), but lost to Wayne Boyce

in the finals.

Due to the fading health of George Nepper, the 1967/68 season was the last.

In that year, Rick Johnson, Tony James and Bob Lewis were finalists in the

1968 Silver Gloves in Richmond. James then entered the 1968 BC Golden Gloves

but lost a decision to 1967 Canadian featherweight champion Wayne Boyce.

BEYOND NEWCASTLE The Nanaimo Boxing Cub

Beyond the Newcatle Boxing club, out of the ashes rose the NANAIMO BOXING CLUB which has produced two
Canadian Champions:

FLASHBACKS - HASTINGS COMMUNITY CENTRE BOXING CLUB

In 1953, Pat O'Reilly and the late Val Roach formed the
"St. Helens Athletic Club" in the east end of Vancouver.
The club served as the foundation for the Hastings
boxing club in 1958. Prior to the construction of the
community centre, Pat trained his boxers in the basement
of his home in Burnaby. One of the first stars of the club
was JOHN STEVENS..

During the Sixties many boxers carried the torch forward
to add an exciting chapter to the pages of amateur boxing
in British Columbia. Some notable stars were

the MacDonald clan, the Greaves boys, the Boyce family,
Danny Crawford, Orland Ralph, Clint Page, and Pat O'Reilly Jr.
Throughout the Sixties, some of the people that helped
were Walter Boyce and Dick Huber.

During the Seventies, a new wave of boxers appeared on the horizon, including

Derek Flanagan, Brian Jones, Dan O'Connell, Jeff Wilfong, Andy Holland,

Terry McKinley, Frank Lactatuorto, Mike O'Reilly and many more.

Following his active boxing, the young O'Reilly was ready to replace his father Pat

as the head coach, but received assistance from the likes of Lindy Lindmoser.

Throughout the Eighties, a score of capable boxers have carried the flag of the

HASTINGS COMMUNITY CENTRE BOXING CLUB. Some of the boxers :

Peter Hogg, Ken, Steve & Tony Anderson, Jason & Steve Downie, Sean Murphy,

Mike O'Connell, Isaac Gock, Glen Quocksister, Michael Roach, Benito Barbato,

Dave Marrello, Randy Scott, Neville White, Rob Howe and many more.

Past of the beauty of Canadian Amateur Boxing is not only the inter-club bouts between Provincial clubs, of competition among Provincial Teams in National competition, but the action that can be found between Provincial Clubs and those in the USA such as

in the BC, Seattle, Tacoma and Oregon Golden Gloves or the 1967 BC Diamond Belt Tournament which also saw the appearance of Montreal boxer Donato Paduano and

former undefeated world heavyweight champion ROCKY MARCIANO.

Then there were those many shows such as the All Star Boxing Card that took place

in Seattle, Washington on March 23, 1968 when five members of the Vancouver based

Firefighters Boxing Club coached by Bert Lowes and Pat West ventured south to

fight not for glory nor gold, but for the thrill of the competition. Those five were:

PORT ALBERNI AMATEUR BOXING CLUB - 1966

There is always hope with a revival of an old boxing club that has been idle for some time

such as the 2 Rivers Boxing Club in Quesnel.

There is always hope when new clubs are formed such as the recent happenings in

Lillooet, BC.

There is always hope when old clubs fade, and a new ones arise from the ashes

such is the case of Nanaimo when the Newcastle Boxing Club faded away and,

within a couple of years, the Nanaimo Boxing Club began in 1971, or

in Victoria, BC when the London Boxing Club was replaced by the Victoria Athletic

Association in 1976 or a couple of years later when the Victoria Jaycees Boxing Club

joined the competition.

Across Canada there are many past and present clubs such as the Hastings Boxing Club

North Burnaby Boxing Club, Spruce Capital and Inner City in Prince George.

As we step past the Rockies we find such clubs as the West Edmonton Knights

and many more in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Then there are those many clubs past and present in Ontario such as London's

East End Club where London, Ontario Sports Hall of Fame boxer Casey Paton

began on his path to Olympic action, or the Sault Ste. Marie Boxing Club

with a family of stars and others as well., or as we approach Quebec we find

the Beaver Boxing Club in Ottawa with many past names and faces.

TRAINING CENTRE and Fade To Black

This is but one of thousands of moments

and events that took place at the

British Columbia Amateur Boxing

Association's during the Eighties

at 250 Willingdon Avenue in Burnaby.

For that occasion, it was the site of

training camp of the 1984 Canadian Olympic

boxing team before theyt travelled to LA

where three boxing medals were won by

Canadian boxers including Willie deWit,

Shawn O"Sullivan and Dale Walters.

Four years later, boxers from across Canada would return before the 1988 Olympics

where Canada's LENNOX LEWIS would win a gold medal before returning to England

to begin a pro journey where he would win a world heavyweight title.

But, the facility was much more than a training site, it also served as a boxing venue

to stage many provincial tournaments from Bronze Gloves to Provincial Championships.

In 1984, it would serve as the venue for the 1984 Junior Nationals Championships

with young boxers from across Canada such as Alberta's Scotty Olson, BC's Manny Sobral,

Saskatchewn's Wesley Sunshine and many more. Also, in May 1984, it would be the final

deciding factor that would complete the 1984 Olympic team.

In the last several years, it has been the training site for the North Burnaby Boxing Club,

but on November 6, 2009 the last fight card will take place, at that facility, and it will become

just another memory as the bright lights fade to black.

1984 a year for the history books
The key tournament staged at the training centre was the dual
Junior Nationals and the Senior Box-offs
The story of these tournament were reported in the

In addition to listing all of the juniuor and senior boxers,
there were many side stories such as the new CABA President
Herb Embuldeniya. Then another side story was
the source of the method for selecting the Best Junior Boxer
which led to the final three choices being
Eric Grenier, Scotty Olson and Stewart Hilton.
The three judges for the best boxer award were all from BV,
but the source that we used was a publication provided by
Alberta official BOB CARSWELL called
"The Fair Play Method: Outstanding Boxer and Sportsmanship
Award Judging Program". the three judges were
Glynn Jones, Tommy Yule and Brian Zelley.

Rounding out the coverage was some background on New Brunswick
boxing coach BOB EDGETT. and a photo of TAYLOR GORDON.

In understanding the history of amateur boxing, a good place to start is the history of the Golden Gloves in places like Vancouver from 1939 to 2009.

The first Golden Gloves tournament in British Columbia was in 1939.

At the end of the action PHIL VICKERY was named Golden Boy,

and the rest is history.

Sadly, Radio Officer Philip Arthur Vane Vickery died on
June 22, 1943.

His name can be found on the Ottawa Memorial and in the

Commonwealth War Graves records.

Throughout the decades, other boxers would be declared Golden Boy

such as Ray Lampkin, Neil Knight, Sammy May, Harold Mann,

Al Curtis, Kalman Santosi, Dick Findlay and many more.

In the Junior Golden Gloves activity, one boxer stands alone.

CLIFF BALLENDINE was declared BC Junior Golden Boy for
three straight years in 1979, 1980 and 1981.
